+ Hacker breaks into ATMs

Barnaby Jack presented a talk at this week’s Black Hat technology conference in Las Vegas.

The hacker showed he could hack into two ATM machines that were onstage.

Jack studied ATM machines and found security weaknesses, which he’s now passing onto vendors in hopes they’ll make the fix.

+ Hard Rock poker room to shrink
Hard Rock Las Vegas,

Less than 2 years ago, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino opened their new, swanky $10 million poker lounge with 18 tables, investing heavily into poker when many other casinos were downsizing after poker's popularity had peaked. Turns out it may have been a bad investment. Hard Rock will soon be closing its poker lounge, though they'll still keep a poker room by moving 6-8 tables elsewhere in the casino. No word yet on what the space will be used for. We'd immediately guess slot machines, but it lends itself to a bar/restaurant.

+ Las Vegas loses to... Pennsylvania?
Las Vegas, Strip, Eiffel Tower, neon. traffic

Yep, it was bound to happen, but perhaps the bounds didn't have to be broken so fast. In the form of taxes collected from gaming revenue, in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, Pennsylvania has now beaten Las Vegas by almost 35 percent... $1.1 billion vs. $831 million. Even Indiana (which much of Chicago visits, primarily the Harrah's Horseshoe in Hammond, IN.) beat out our fine neon city at $878 million in tax revenue. Even in this economy, gambling is here to stay. It's just that tourists would rather stay in their backyard than visit Las Vegas.

+ Rumor Las Vegas boutique hotel now open, buy 1 night, get 1 free

rumorvegas.jpg

It's a rumor no longer -- Rumor Las Vegas is now open.

The latest hotel to launch in Las Vegas is a small boutique hotel at 455 E. Harmon (steps from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino), with 150 rooms (all suites) containing patios and private balconies, all wrapped in a quaint 2-story building. We plugged in a few dates and found rooms in the $140 range for the weekend and $80 for weekdays.

+ Shipped my first MTT
Just a quick update… I only play MTTs sporadically and I’m sure I am down lifetime at them… but I shipped a deep stack $22 freezeout on Pokerstars this past Sunday. A great feeling, although because of the deep-stack slow level format it took 10+ hours to win a 400 person $8k prize pool tournament. [...]

+ The Coaching Debate
This past weekend I had a brief session where I was coached by a local high stakes player. Actually, “coached” is probably overstating it, as a) no money was exchanged and b) he was playing, not me. I watched him on Teamviewer – a very nice collaboration tool that I recommend for poker coaching and [...]

A while back I received a review copy of the very promising software Poker Co-Pilot.
